Groundhog Day (Single)

This is a song I wrote to talk about my views on everything going on in the year 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the George Floyd protests.

Year's beginning, we thought we had 2020 vision
Most of us were in a "New Year, New Me" condition
Oh by spring time, we would find, most of us were more than right
But wrong about the enemy we'd all have to fight

The mask I wear to not catch COVID-19
Can't help me when I'm caught up in my feelings

On how doctors, artists, grocers, cooks, truckers and who teach
Mailers, waiters, transit, booze, and the P.O.C.
Are overworked and underpaid to a fault
Or how when there's no more live sports to be watched on TV
You can't help but get to know all your family
And see your kids teachers are not wrong at all
But the more that we love each other from 6 feet away
The faster we can say tomorrow won't be groundhog day

Even when this blows over, processing will take a while
And it's okay if you're not okay enough to smile
We're all human, not immune to feeling like we're all alone
There ain't a quarantine gene anywhere in our bones

We're gonna get back to our lives sometime soon
And I already know all the things I'll do

I will dance a little harder when the band finally plays
Scream a little louder at my teams first ball game
Tip bigger and buy some more rounds at the bar
I will hug my family tighter whether they're blood or not
Finally take up that hobby I've been putting off
Be grateful for that job I want to discard
Yeah the more that we love each other from 6 feet away
The faster we can say tomorrow won't be groundhog day

Now is the time to define your own sense of freedon
And become the Joe Exotic of your own kingdon

And hope doctors, artists, grocers, cooks, truckers and who teach
Mailers, waiters, transit, booze and the P.O.C.
Will be fairly paid and be loved to a fault
Remember when there's no more live sports to be watched on TV
You can't help but get to know all your family
And see your kids teachers are not wrong at all
Yeah the more that we love each other from 6 feet away
